I created a narative using notes from recorded thoughts about some of the places I visited in London together with a description of my living room.
The Story
Living in London, in her living room, London lives.
Her living room is her most precious room in her flat. It is the heart of her home. So much so that she prefers to crash out on the futon at night instead of her comfy bed located towards the rear of her flat. Her bed hasn't been slept in for weeks.
In this room she feels most comfortable. Its not the furniture that gives her the warm cosy feeling of home, but the objects that are displayed on top/ or within them, representing fragments of who she is, her past, her present, her future aspirations. (pics 1-3)
Charing Cross Rd is the centre of importance within her living room, a bookshelf that hosts a large variety of books. It stands tall in the middle of the room, a visual display for all to see and summarise her mentally without the limitations of words. On the right sits HMV in the shape of her mini chrome Hifi system with blue strobe lights adding to the contemporary feel of her home. (pics 4-5)
To the left Brixton High RD, Market, The Afro Caribbean hair shops and the plethora of essential beauty products all placed inside her draw/cupboard. On the top of the high Street lies the Ritzy Cinema a 9inch TV/video and DVD player placed on top of it.
Work and university are situated to the far right. Here she spends most of her time organising her finances over the internet or typing essays for before the deadline. Her beach-wood desk holds her most favoured communication devices, her computer and her home phone. (pics 9-11)
But she much prefers to use her phone whilst relaxing at Gemini health and beauty salon which is located on the far left hand side of her room. Here on her futon she receives relaxing massages while watching TV in the comfort of her living room. Earth tones meshed with symbols of African art is an open display of her cultural heritage and her acknowledgment of such. (pics 12-13)
Across the road sit Dish Dash her favourite Persian restaurant. After relaxing at Gemini’s she can eat a delicious meal dinner so casually, sitting on her living room floor. 14-15)
Sometimes she moves her coffee table to expose Hyde Park in the shape of her colourful rug. It sets the tone for colours that will grace her walls in the future. (pics 16-17)
The mystery of history, fancy fiction, neutral networks of technology, the assorted textures of textiles, defines and styles her room. (pics 18)
